  15. successful jockey in Thoroughbred-racing history; with paralyzed
  16. limbs, a broken pelvis and internal injuries suffered when his
  17. four-wheel-drive vehicle plunged down a 50-ft. embankment in an
  18. apparently alcohol-related accident; in Inglewood, Calif.
  19. Shoemaker, who became a trainer after retiring 14 months ago,
  20. won 8,833 races and purses worth $123.4 million during his
  21. 41-year career.
